The Forest encompasses 1, 300 km-square of the Akita and Aomori Prefectures. Juniko Lakes are 12 lakes that were divided 300 years ago by a 6.9 earthquake. Each lake has a different color, different depth and species. The contour is concave with some centers deep enough to reach volcanic ground. It is unsafe to enter, as many can disappear into the pits of the earth. The water in the center is also boiling hot, like a hot spring. It is said that when looking into its waters, you will not see your reflection, as it reflects your surroundings due to its concave shape.

The Forest served as a battleground 9000 years ago for the 76th and 77th emperor during the war between the Royal Samurai Clan (a.k.a the Mori) and the assassins (the Kan). When the samurai won the battle, the assassins had no choice but to surrender. From the Muromachi Period (1336-1573) up until the end of WWII, many Ainu revolts took place against the Japanese some leading to a war. The forest was then split into the modern day prefectures: Aomori and Akita.

In the present, the Mori run a biotech company called THE MORI GROUP (TMG). Aomori is divided between the Kan and the Mori, and the HIDEKI GROUP (HG) own the Akita section of the forest. Together, they form the Shirakami-Sanchi Organization (S.S.O).
